Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-37
Genealogies, really?
- Just lists of names (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
- Basis for legal rights (land ownership, priestly services)
- Prerequisite for the Messiah (Genesis 3:17, Genesis 49:10, Isaiah 11:10)
Contradictions – or maybe not
- 3-times 14 generations – or 17? (1 Chronicles 3:10-12)
- 42 generations vs. 77 generations
- Joseph, son of Jacob – or Heli? (Matthew 1:16, Luke 3:23)
- Curse on Jeconiah (Jeremiah 22:28-30)
- Accepted solution: genealogies of Joseph (in Matthew) and Mary (in Luke)
Importance for us
- God’s plan are always perfect!
- We are adopted into God’s family (John 1:12-13)
- Sinners are a big part of God’s plan – and He is not subtle about it (1 Chronicles 3:1-9)
- God writes history in unconventional ways (Genesis 38, Joshua 2, Ruth, 2 Samuel 11)
