Living in the Reality of Grace (Romans 6)
Our New Reality: Dead to the Old Life
- Jesus’ death was our death; the power of sin over us is legally broken (Romans 6:2).
- Our “old self” was crucified so that we are no longer slaves to our past (Romans 6:6).
- Baptism marks our vital union with Christ’s burial and his new life (Romans 6:4-5).
The Choice of the Mind: Counting the Truth
- We must “reckon” or credit ourselves as dead to sin and alive to God (Romans 6:11).
- Grace does not mean we are free to sin; it means we are free from sin (Romans 6:15).
- Believers choose to stay away from “old traps” because they belong to a new home (Romans 6:12-13).
The Handover: Presenting Our Bodies as Weapons
- Every part of our body—hands, eyes, speech—is a weapon for God’s use (Romans 6:13).
- True freedom is found only in becoming “slaves to righteousness” (Romans 6:18).
- Obedience now flows from a heart changed by the beauty of Gospel teaching (Romans 6:17).
The Reward of Grace: Life Over Death
- The result of serving sin is a spiritual paycheck of death (Romans 6:23).
- Holiness is not a burden but the natural fruit of being right with God (Romans 6:22).
- Eternal life is a free gift, not a wage we can ever earn (Romans 6:23).
Living it Out: Grace in the Daily Grind
- Identify one specific “member” of your body (e.g., your tongue or your social media thumb) to intentionally hand over to God’s command this morning (Romans 6:13).
- When a “fleshly desire” resurfaces, audibly remind yourself: “I have died to that; I am alive to God” (Romans 6:11).
- Reflect on a situation where you chose “worldly freedom” recently; how did it actually lead to a sense of corruption or emptiness? (Romans 6:21).
