From No Condemnation to “Abba, Father” (Romans 8:1-17)
1. No Condemnation — A New Reality in Christ
- God has dealt with sin decisively in Christ, not through the law
- The law is fulfilled in us through those who walk by the Spirit
- We live from a new position: accepted, not striving for acceptance
2. A New Realm — From Flesh to Spirit
- The issue is not behavior first, but which realm we belong to
- The flesh is hostile and unable to submit to God
- The Spirit brings life and peace, already active in us
- The same Spirit who raised Christ is at work in our present weakness
3. A New Power — Putting Sin to Death by the Spirit
- We are no longer obligated to the flesh
- By the Spirit, we actively put sin to death
- This is not self-effort, but Spirit-enabled obedience
- Struggle against sin is not failure—it is evidence of the Spirit at work
4. A New Relationship — Led as Children of God
- To be led by the Spirit is the mark of belonging to God
- The Spirit produces adoption and assurance, not fear
- “Abba, Father” expresses intimate trust with reverence
- We are drawn into Jesus’ own relationship with the Father
5. Living It Out — Questions for Reflection
- Where do you still think or live as if you are under condemnation (v.1)?
- In what area is your mindset still shaped more by the flesh than by the Spirit (v.5–6)?
- Where do you see the Spirit confronting something in your life (v.13)—and how are you responding?
- When did you last consciously turn to God as “Abba, Father” in a real situation (v.15)? What held you back—or drew you in?
Key Takeaway
“I belong to Christ, His Spirit lives in me, and I can come to God as my Father.”
