From Groaning to Glory

Living in Unshakable Assurance (Romans 8:18-39)

1. Present Suffering vs. Future Glory

  • Our suffering is real – but not ultimate (Rom 8:18)
  • Creation and believers both groan under brokenness (Rom 8:22–23)
  • Glory is not abstract – it is restoration of all things

2. Already Children, Not Yet Fully Revealed

  • We have the Spirit as firstfruits – real adoption now (Rom 8:15,23)
  • We still wait for the redemption of our bodies
  • Christian life = tension: assurance + longing

3. God’s Purpose: Becoming Like Christ

  • “Good” = conformity to Christ, not comfort (Rom 8:28–29)
  • God’s plan is unbroken: foreknown → glorified
  • Christ-likeness shows in trust and obedience in suffering

4. Absolute Security in God’s Love

  • No suffering means God has abandoned us – false (Rom 8:35)
  • In all things, we are more than conquerors (Rom 8:37)
  • Nothing can separate us from Christ’s love – nothing (Rom 8:38–39)

Application: Life with Unshakable Confidence

  1. Where in your life are you currently experiencing frustration, pain, or “groaning” – and how is it actually affecting your relationship with God right now?
  1. Think of a difficult situation you’re in:
How might God be using this specifically to make you more like Christ – and where do you resist that?
  1. When you suffer, what is your honest first thought about God – and how does Romans 8:35–39 confront or correct that reaction?
