God’s Sovereign Mercy and the Humble Heart of Faith

How God’s Mercy Shapes Our View of the Lost (Romans 9)

1. God’s Sovereign Mercy Is the Only Basis of Salvation

(Romans 9:15–16)

  • Salvation does not depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy
  • If salvation were based on justice, none would be saved
  • Election is rooted in God’s freedom, not our performance

2. God’s Sovereignty Does Not Remove Human Responsibility

(Romans 9:30–32)

  • Gentiles received righteousness by faith, not by law
  • Israel pursued righteousness by works and stumbled
  • Unbelief is not ignorance alone, but resistance to grace

3. The Human Heart Resists Grace and Prefers Self-Righteousness

(Romans 9:31–32)

  • We naturally want to earn righteousness rather than receive it
  • Self-righteousness leads to pride and comparison with others
  • Even believers must guard against subtle forms of merit-thinking

4. Christ Is Either a Stumbling Stone or the Foundation

(Romans 9:33)

  • Jesus confronts our pride and self-sufficiency
  • Those who reject grace stumble over Him
  • Those who trust Him will never be put to shame

Application: Reflection Questions

(Romans 9:2–3)

  1. Who in my life is far from Christ—and do I truly care for them?
  2. Do I ever look down on others instead of remembering God’s mercy to me?
  3. Who will I reach out to this week—and how?
